Suicide in the elderly: an epidemiologic study

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the incidence and means of elderly suicide in Brazil. Method: Epidemiologic, cross-sectional, quantitative, retrospective study. Results: In this period, 8,977 suicides took place among population over 60 years. highest rates concentrated 80, which presented mean 8.4/100,000 for between 70 79 years, with 8.2/100,000. Considering total value reached 7.8/100,000, whereas general 5.3/100,000. values are always higher population: last five years is 47.2% than population. main hanging (68%), followed firearm (11%), self-intoxication (9%), falling from high (5%), undefined or undetermined (6%). Conclusion: Epidemiologic analyses bring visibility to dyad aging suicide, corroborating pertinence theme.
